Lifecycle member spotlight: an interview with Dan Perrin
This week we chat to Dan Perrin, Director of Daniel Perrin & Co.
Tell us a bit about yourself
Im a Fellow Member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and a Chartered Tax Adviser specialising in Owner Managed Businesses, with 18 years experience in the accountancy field. Im also a Fellow Member of the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) and Chairman of the AAT South Wales branch. My specialties include tax compliance & planning and company accounts.
Whates the first thing you do at the start of your working day?
Wait for the alarm to wake me with relaxing music, then check my emails on my phone.
How do you plan out your day? A good old fashioned to do list, or more go with the flow?
Go with the flow to be honest, some days are a to do list so I have a bit more structure, but other days ites just go with the flow.
Whates your desk and workspace like?
Ashamed to admit it but messy. Im trying to think of another way to describe it organised chaos. Messy but organised.
What is the big issue affecting your sector at the moment?
Got to be Covid businesses surviving through Covid.
Do you have a business niche?
Being a Chartered Tax Adviser and Chartered Certified Accountant, looking at it from two angles. Ive developed an excellent working knowledge of the Companies Act 2006, UK Financial Reporting Standards and current UK tax legislation. I also work with a number of clients to ensure they are able to benefit from accountancy software and cloud-based options.
What do you do to escape the world of tax and accounts?
A live concert or stand-up comedy, but since Covid more likely a virtual wine tasting evening.
Have you always been interested in numbers and can you remember your first calculator?
Ive still got my first calculator the best £4.95 I ever spent, and yes I think Ive always been interested in numbers.
Tell us something that not many people know about you?
Many years ago, I was a DJ on hospital radio. Ites all been centralised now, but I did it for a few years at Morriston hospital. Ill never forget my first session my first song was Eddie Cochranes Three Steps to Heaven, which probably wasnt the best song to play on a hospital radio!
How has your practice benefited from being part of the Lifecycle accountancy network?
Ites having business partners who I know I can trust with my clients. A client I referred to Siann Huntley recently was singing her praises, and ites all about having relationships with people you know will do a good job. I also find the free CPD events really informative and worthwhile.
